yesterday morning. he said it was pretty easy to see. >> it peaked mostly on saturday morning. he was up that early. my goodness. that was like 3 in the morning. i tried to see it earlier in the night. i couldn't see it. so you're not alone. it really depended on exactly when you were looking at it. lot of people did sleep right through it. but amazing sight if you did see it. few clouds in the sky. 35 degrees the current temperature. the forecast for today. it is a lit bellow normal. still in the low 50s towards the afternoon, with scattered clouds throughout the day. we're expecting maybe the winds out of the northeast five to ten miles per hour. could be chilly when you factor those in. we are talking about the thanksgiving day holiday. looks like we may coast right through it. we'll have details on that when we come back. >> thank you, ava. our biggs story, a baltimore county community threatened by

an underground gas leak. >> more than a dozen homes will be demolished following a seattlement between homeowners and a big oil company. >> look at it. look at the rust. that's from diesel fuel. >> residents believe it's the effect of years of under ground fuel contamination from this hess gas station to nearby back yards, basements and under ground drain age pipes. 16 homes on the block have been bought by hess and are expected to be demolished this spring. according to david marks, it's part of a legal settlement between those homeowners and hess. >> i certainly would have preferred steps earlier to deal with this. >> the investigation started in 1987 from under ground storage tanks at that time hess. those tanks were removed in 1991

and no liquid fuel has been detected in monitoring wells since 1995. but the department says there are still low levels of fuel contamination in the ground water and resulting in continued reports of gas odors in the neighborhood. >> you can smell it right here. >> i can smell it. do you smell that? >> i can smell that. >> none of the homeowners would talk to us, but we did talk to mel teal and his nephew who were not included in the settlement because he was told it stopped five feet from his property. >> the fumes and the oil slick and the water was just gushing from the -- that hatch right there. and it was coming directly into our back yard. i don't understand why our house is not -- is okay but all these aren't. we're right behind the gas station. >> the teals say the department of environment took samples from their house about a year ago. >> they never got back with me

with any information. we were left out in the cold. >> and left with that uneasy fuel odor. >> you don't even want to strike a match out here in the summertime because that's how bad the fumes are. it can't be healthy for us. it can't be. >> officials say the contamination has not affected the drinking water because the homes are on public water. as for the land where those homes will be demolished, sources say it will probably turn into a public park if the land is not too hazardous. in the news room, wbal, tv 11 news. a house fire sent two people to the hospital including a firefighter. those are expected to survive. the fire in the 900 block of malverne hill drive was report t around 7 saturday morning. it took the firefighters half an hour to bring it under control. the 67-year-old man was take ton the hospital with serious but nonlife threatening injuries. a firefighter was also take ton the hospital with minor injuries. the cause is still under

investigation. in baltimore city officials are investigating a fatal hit and run accident. it happened in northeast baltimore. police say a car hit a man shortly before 2 a.m. in the 5300 block of frankford avenue. police are searching for a black four door mazda with a partial maryland tag of 5183 or 5189. also in the city, police are investigating a shooting in the 300 block of east north avenue. it happened shortly before 2 saturday morning. police said they arrived to find the 30-year-old man with multiple gun shot wound. the victim was taken to an area hospital. there is no word on his condition or any possible suspect. it's become a prethank ps giving day tradition. an event at the courthouse where individuals become families just in time for the holidays. deb la weiner has that story. >> once a year balloons mark the joy that takes place inside the clarence mitchell courthouse in baltimore.

it is national adoption day. for ronald wilkins and his wife, it means two 15-year-old boys living in foster care officially become their sons. >> congratulations to both of you. >> good morning. looking very quiet over the mid-atlantic right now, but a few clouds are just starting to creep in. we started to see those overnight. they're going to increase

throughout the day. that's because there's a little bit of the disturbance down across the carolinas which you can see most of the showers off shore on the radar. a few of them creeping into the coast of south carolina. they may start to migrate into the outer banks. this area of unsettled weather is going to alert nearby as we go into the upcoming work week. we'll talk about that coming up in the seven day. winds are very calm, only around five miles per hour. that's typical. normally we see the strongest winds throughout the day. look at it already down towards the coast. 18 miles per hour in ocean city, ten miles in chrisville. that's part of the disturbance down towards the south. that's helping increase the winds in southern maryland. 75 the current temperature at bwi thurgood marshal.

50 right now in ocean city. anywhere that we saw the clouds overnight especially from the river all the way to ocean city. little warmer. that helps keep temperatures from falling too much. forecast for today, pretty similar across the state. low to mid 50s into the afternoon. 53 for southern maryland. 52 right around baltimore. you're going to see increase in clouds especially south of us. not as cloudy as you get up into southern pennsylvania. a much cooler. high 43 degrees. if you plan to be out across the bay, there are concerns for the winds. winds 10 to 15 knots, maybe gusts around 20 miles per hour and waves one to two feet at times flp is a small craft advisory in effect south of the bay bridge. keep that in mind if you plan to be out on the water today. that disturbance sitting off the carolinas. otherwise high pressure into the east. we're going to skip ahead as we go into the thanksgiving

holiday. this is what we are expecting. a storm system brewing off the carolinas. coastal storm. except it's way off the coast. this is great news. lot of people traveling especially in the east. this is good news. fact that the models are keeping it completely off shore. high pressure will be the dominant weather pattern over the east. that takes you into our seven day forecast. pretty quiet one especially for the holiday week. increasing clouds. partly sunny skies tomorrow. maybe some showers migrate up monday or tuesday. by wednesday, we are partly sunny, high 57. for turkey day, 67. a new front comes through on friday.

some maryland homeowners are out thousands of dollars because of a contractor who allegedly lied about his license, took their money and ran. >> now he's facing criminal charges. today we tracked him down and explains why the homeowners are frustrated with the state. >> george holland needed some work done on the roof of his home, so in june he hired a a contractor who said he had been in business for 20 years. >> do you think he was trustworthy at first snt. >> yes, i did. there was really no reason not to think so. i was wrong. >> this is the man george holland hired. holland said he gave him a cash deposit plus this check for $2,100 up front. >> it was given june 1st. he cashed it on june 1st. he said that he was going to buy shingles with that money. >> but? >> never showed up. >> that scenario sounds familiar to candy anthony. here's a copy of her contract for roof repairs and the check

she wrote. >> asked for half of the funds up front. i wrote out a check for $3,500. he cashed that check almost the very next day. > candy said he never came back. >> i feel violated. the money is, you know, something we can't just give away. you know? and we trusted him. >> george holland and candy anthony say they thought mark chiwady was a licensed contract. he told them he was working under a cousin's license. that's a red flag. they cannot work under someone el's license. that's a crime. we talked him down at this residence in cecil ton. can we talk to you? channel 11 news. he didn't respond and disappeared into his background. we also tried calling but the person on the other end hung up. they filed theft charges again

chiwady. >> i have been in touch with the governor's office wshg the maryland home improvement council. >> he filed a complaint with the maryland home improvement commission in july but is frustrated that the process is taking so long. the state recognizes homeowner frustration with the system. >> the vast majority of our complaints are from homeowners and contractors who operate in good faith. they just come to a point where they can't resolve it between themselves. >> michael vorgat said the state hopes to speed things up with new initiatives that will weed out the less serious complaints. >> and if we can do that, we'd have more time and resources to focus on the very bad actors. >> the commission filed a criminal charge against mark chiwady but it won't be resolved quickly. he has requested a jury trial. as for george and candy, they both won default judgments against him in civil court but they're doubtful they'll get their money back. a big price to pay to learn a

>> the fda uncovered a possible danger related to 5 hour energy shots you see almost everywhere. the agency said the energy drinks have been linked to 13 deaths, 92 life threatening incidents since 2008. those incidents include heart attacks, con vul shuns and at least one miscarriage. the report comes a month after the fda said monster energy drinks were at risk. the risk of autism may be higher in mothers who contracted the flu or had a fever for more than a week during pregnancy. it included 97,000 children born in denmark between 1997 and 2003. children whose mothers had the

flu or a week long fever while pregnant had twice the risk of being diagnosed with autism disorder before age 3. resever tfrjts state health department has new remembering men dayings for hospitals for breast-feeding mothers. they are focused on the time that the mother is in the hospital with her newborn. kie reid has more. >> on average, a mother and her newborn will stay in a hospital for 24 to 48 hours after delivery. that's why the state health department has come up with remembericommendations for that critical time urging the mother to breast-feed. >> lot of mothers come in wanting to breast-feed, but fewer are able to be successful. >> the tenrec men -- recommendations are helping mothers initiate breast-feeding within an hour of birth,

allowing mother and infants to remain together 24 hours a day and informing all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breast-feeding. >> we know for a healthy baby, breast milk is the ideal nutrition. it's really optimal not on for nutrition purposes but also immunities. there are babies who need to have a special formula. then there are moms who choose to bottle feed. >> the recommendations aren't mandatory and were developed by a team of 150 people over a years time. hospitals that meet all tenrec recommendations will achieve maryland status. about six are committed to complying. >> we're in a great position. >> dr. robert atlas said the hospital has seen a 20% increase in breast-feeding mothers in the past seven years and hopes to continue the trend. >> we've seen a marked increase

>> a fourth grader took a bad situation and turned it into a good idea. she's working a nonprofit organization for families who lost their homes in a fire after her family suffered that same fate. kim stacy has more. >> lauren hunt and her family are settled into a home in search. but just a few months ago on july 7th their house in hanover went up in flames from a grill fire. the family lost nearly everything. >> days after having to tell the kids we weren't going to be able to go home. they were looking for things of theirs. it was heart breaking. >> lauren and her three brothers immediately missed some of her items like a blanket she had when she was 4. she asked for a replacement

blanket and got several extra. that gave her an idea. >> i thought maybe some people would want some of the stuft i also wanted after a fire. like a blanket and stuffed animals. >> and with that, lauren's luggage was born. she started collecting luggage and backpacks and filled them with toothbrush and tooth place and also blankets, stuffed animals and toys. the toys are given to families like the hunts who are victims of fire and other disasters that take away their homes. >> days after the fire it makes it easier for them. >> it's an amazing idea. >> the luggage kits are in several fire stations and lauren is listed as a resource for the red cross. she's got a face book page and website where people can donate items to donate supplies.

after a busy week brian moore wbal tv 11 news. cease fire efforts appear to be gaining momentum there. israel is pressing ahead with its power. gaza militants haven't attacked israel since the night before. a doctor in new jersey is facing several charges after large amounts of chemicals commonly used for making bombs and explosive devices was discovered at the home. police also found several assault rifles and other weapons when they searched the home of roberto rivera. police went to rivera's home after getting a report of potentially hazardous material in the house. jts six people were injured after two pasadena police helicopters smacked into each other.

one chopper clipped another while landing and the other was taking off. it happened yesterday at the pasadena police department's heli pad. it appears none of the injuries are life threatening and the national transportation safety board is investigating. idaho police are searching for two men who killed a monkey at a zoo exhibit. police say a security guard saw two men running away from the primate exhibit saturday morning and one of the zoo's monkeys was found with a serious head injury fp veterinarian was brought in but the monkey died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck. in ohio saturday, more than 200 dogs were taken from a puppy mill. people removed the dogs, many of which were found to be in poor health. people were running the business from inside their home. they will likely now face animal cruelty charges. at least 30 different breeds of puppies were confiscated during that raid. a 40-year-old, the 11 news i

>> good morning. we're starting you off with a live look outdoors. it is 35 at the airport, 46 downtown. the humidity right now at 92% and the winds at the airport are mainly calm. we're lakely to see those out of the northeast today. that could make it feel just a little chilly at times. looking at that time radar picture. it is quiet over the entire state of maryland.

no rain showing up right now. there are showers building back toward the outer banks. more showers pushing on to the coast of south carolina. little disturbance that we have to watch as it develops into the next couple days. let's take a look at current conditions right now. winds are quiet downtown around five miles per hour. you get further down toward the south and east, 18 mile per hour winds in ocean city. that's a concern as areas below the bay could see stronger winds. we'll talk about that coming up as we get into the bay forecast. 41 degrees in washington, d.c. right now. even warmer in the southern part of the state, where temperatures range from the mid 40s to near 50 in ocean city. that's where they've seen some clouds overnight. any time we have clouds that keep the temperature warmer, it prevents the temperatures from dropping down overnight. just a little bit warmer than where we have the clouds.

as we go throughout the day though are creeping up from that disturbance in the carolinas. 54 for the high today in ocean city. around 52 degrees. little bit more sunshine as we head into southern pennsylvania. if you plan to be out in the bay today, winds will be a concern. especially as you go to the chesapeake. winds expected 10 to 15 knots, gusts up to 20. the strongest waves and winds will be south of the bay bridge. that's where there is a small craft advisory in effect through monday. the next high tide 9:41 this morning and 10:26 in the evening hours. as you look at the forecast way ahead. going all the way to the thanksgiving holiday. things are looking okay across the coast. high pressure will be the dominant factor. we've been talking about the possibility of a coastal storm. it looks like it's going to stay way off shore. next thing you have to worry about is the cold front that's going to be coming in from the west. that's likely to impact us as we

get into friday. looking at the seven day frat, pretty good leading into thanksgiving. 52 today. 53 tomorrow. those showers could creep up monday, tuesday. they'll stay away from baltimore. 57 for the high. on turkey day, mostly sunny skies. the next cold front comes by friday night. a fishing pier that was rafb ajd by hurricane sandy will be rebuilt in time for next summer. a section of the pier disappeared into the ocean. the mayor has said that the pier is of tremendous importance to the residents and visitors. the mayor has already committed to rebuilding it. if you plan on restoring the city, there's a new app you should know about. there's a technology app that will make it easier to find a spot. all you need is a smart phone.

this morning the i team exposes a boarding house scheme that city inspectors put tenants in danger. who is running it and what were the conditions like? barry simms takes us inside. >> erika haley shared this space with her two daughters. >> this is my room. the living room, this was the living room. they built this wall here. this is where i sleep. there's no window. if a fire breaks outside there, i'm trapped inside here. me and my two children. >> she moved in after shining a rental agreement. the house located at 3512 lieu seal avenue in northwest baltimore. they paid rent to two men who they thought represented the property owner. burton said one of them made some big promises. >> when i got here he was making all these promises. he said oh it's going to be carpeted. we're going to have wash r and dryer. there's two bathrooms when only there's one bathroom you can

use. i'm sharing with my two kids and 12 other people. >> that included sandra edwards. >> it was nothing like he said. he said there were two bathrooms, there was a washer and dryer. that's why he was charging us $450 a month. >> less than a month after moving in, these tenants wsh forced out. inspectors checked the house and found the conditions unsafe and unhealthy. >> it's overcrowded. you only have one bathroom. you got 12 people in there. you're supposed to have at least three working bathrooms. that's a huge problem. >> and it's illegal. the tenants shared the second floor bathroom, telling us they could not use this dirty bathroom in the basement. to get to it they had to maneuver around mounds of trash. missing smoke detectors and holes exposing wiring also posed fire and safety has ards. we tried to talk with anyone responsible for the house. we finally caught up with eric

hinton. they believed hinton was one of the landlords. >> mr. hinton, can we talk to you? >> i don't own the property. >> you're still the landlord. >> no i'm not. >> what's the situation with the property? >> there's no situation. >> why are people being thrown out? >> nobody is being thrown out. >> that's what they're telling us. >> i'm just hearing about it. >> you're just hearing about it? >> hinton's name appears thon rental agreement. it said tenants are to pay the rent to him or this man, germane miller. city housing officials say they leased the house for $1100 a month. the homeowner was unaware of what they were up to until neighbors complained about trash and he went to see it. the assistant housing commissioner jason hessler. >> doors have been changed, altered with numbers and locks that weren't there before. >> this wasn't the only

>> it's cold. >> it is cold. >> i know. it's startling when you start off today. 30s and 40s. >> that's one thing it does feel colder than it should be already. look at the temperatures downtown. 35. but step outside. you've got 36 at the airport. 35 right now. the forecast for today, high temperatures expected to be anywhere from 50 to 55. that 55 temperature likely downtown. you'll be closer to the 50 degree mark as you head into the northern suburbs. scattered clouds expected today. sun will rise at 6:54 this morning. little breezy at times with winds out of the northeast. we'll talk about the forecast leading into the week. gonna be a big forecast because it's the holiday. stay tuned for details. our big story. a baltimore county community threatened by an underground gas leak. >> more than a dozen homes will

be demolished following a settlement between homeowners and a big oil company. >> look at it. look at the rust. that's from diesel fuel. >> residents believe it tees effect of years of under ground fuel contamination from this hess gas station. to nearby back yards, basements and under ground drainage pops. 16 homes on the block have been bought by hess and are expected to be demolished this spring. according to david mark, it's part of a legal settlement between those homeowners and hess. >> i certainly would have preferred some steps earlier by the gasoline company to deal with this. >> maryland's department of environment started investigating a fuel leak in 1987 from under ground storage tanks at the hess. mde said those tanks were removed in 1991 and no liquid fuel has been detected in monitoring wells since 1995.

but the department says there are still low levels of fuel contamination in the ground water and resulting in continued reports of gas odors in the neighborhood. >> i can smell it. >> i smell that. >> none of the homeowners who settled would talk to us. we did talk to mel and his nephew who were not included in the settlement because they were told the contamination stopped five feet from their property. >> the fumes and everything and the oil slick and the water was just gushing from the -- that's the back of the house right there. it was coming directly into our back yard. i don't understand why our house is, do you know what i mean, okay, but all these aren't, and we're right behind the gas station. >> the teals say the department of environment took samples from their house about a year ago. >> they never got back with me with any information. we were left out in the cold. >> and left with that uneasy

fuel odor. >> you don't even want to strike a match out here in the summertime because that's how bad the fumes are. >> it can't be healthy for us. >> state officials say the contamination has not affected the drinking water because the homes are on public water. sources say the land will turn into paub lick park if the land is not too hazardous. wbal tv 11 news. a house fire sent two people to the hospital including a fire fight but both are expected to survive. that fire in the 900 block was reported around 7 on saturday morning. they say it took 60 firefighters about half an hour to bring it under control. a 57-year-old man who lived in the house was transported to the hospital with serious but nonlife threatening injuries and a firefighter was take ton the hospital with minor injuries. the cause remains under investigation. baltimore city police are investigating a fatal hit and

run accident. it happened yesterday morning in the northeast baltimore section. police say a car hit a man shortly before 2 in the morning on frankfurt avenue. he died later at a hospital. police are searching for a black four door mazda with a partial maryland tag of 5183 or 5189. also in the city, police are investigating a shooting in the 300 block of east north avenue. happened before 2 on saturday morning. police arrived to find a 30-year-old man with multiple gun shot wounds. the victim was transported to an area hospital. there's no word on his condition. >> 6:04 and 37 degrees. coming up the debate over potentially life threatening drugs for those who overdose on illegal drugs. >> it's free in some parts of baltimore but practically out of reach for others. but first it's a live picture outside. we have your insta weather plus forecast after the break. stay with us. ♪

>> good morning. live view from sky cam. still dark out there. lot of the city lights are on. if you look across the eastern horizon the sky is starting to lighten up. the sun will be coming up within the next half hour. 45 downtown. 36 degrees at bwi thurgood marshall. humidity 89%. the winds are out of the north around three miles per hour. stronger winds as you get into the southern part of the state. we'll talk about how that affects the forecast in just a little bit. first let's look at that time radar picture. quiet over the entire mid-atlantic. look down toward the south. look at the carolinas. this is a little disturbance causing some showers right now. nothing major but enough so that it's going to be a cloudy day across the outer banks. showers spreading in as well. notice how the rain is spreading in across the coast of south

carolina. this disturbance is going to sit down to our south for the next couple days and may throw some more clouds our way. maybe even some showers in the southern part of the state. let's look at the current conditions what we're seeing right now. we talked about temperatures closer to baltimore. what about the rest of the state? actually fairly warm as you get further down toward the south. that's where we're seeing some clouds spreading up over the carolinas. 50 in ocean city. big difference when you compare to it the 30s we're experiencing right now closer to baltimore. those clouds really help keep temperatures warmer overnight. clouds also blocking the sunshine. southern parts of the state are starting off warmer they're not going to be too much warmer into the afternoon. more clouds including saint mary's county all the way over to ocean city. around 52 the high in baltimore. sunshine as you go further up toward the north. same case in the mountains as well. but 43. high temperature in the mountains, going to be a chilly

one even as you go into the afternoon. winds are calm as you get around the downtown area. starting to strengthen. 23 miles per hour. 20 mile per hour winds in ocean city. so there is a small craft advisory in effect for southern portions of the bay. south of the bay bridge. that goes all the way into tomorrow. the next high tide today at 9:41 in the morning, then 10:26 this evening. out across the bay one to two feet. you're gonna get the strongest winds south of the bay bridge. that's where you have to be careful if you plan to bout and about today. i'm going to fast forward. this is a model interpretation of what's going to happen on thanksgiving day. high pressure settles into the east. that little disturbance off the carolinas kicks out to sea. this is all great news. this is showing fairly pleasant travel weather leading up to the holiday and great weather if you plan to be out and about on thanksgiving day getting to all your holiday travel

overdosed in his parents home. >> at one point when we turned him over, he seemed to be maybe gurgling. i remember thinking okay, he's -- we couldn't save him. >> the only thing for devastating than losing her danny was discovering that there is an overdose blocking drug that is saving lives. >> as a parent to lose a child you want to know that we did everything that we could to be able to save him. so i was sad to know that i could have if i had it, would that have made a difference? i'll never know. >> only dan could have obtained the prescription anecdote, not tony. an anecdote so powerful they are actually giving it away in baltimore city. it is sold under the name narcam

a fast acting drug that blocks the effects of opiates on the brain and restores breathing. >> when you administer it, you see it. >> while the law prohibits tony torch from getting it from a loved one in baltimore city those in drug treatment can get it to potentially help save their addictive friends. >> it could help. it could help. >> the wrong kind of help according to one of the most widely known figures in the area of drug treatment and prevention. >> you give them clean needles so they don't get aids. we give them narcan so they don't die. are we gonna give them heroin next? why stop? >> we come from the idea that we're going to reduce harm the best we can. give them tools they need to help survive. that's why will we do what we do. >> it is called the staying alive program. drug overdose prevention funded through baltimore's needle

exchange. the only program of its kind in maryland. after instruction that include rescue breathing, a doctor writes prescription for narcan. >> it will have an effect on heroin. >> and cocaine and painkillers too. since the program began, 9300 people have been trained. while it's hard to nail down numbers, so often people don't report back. city officials confirm at least 220 overdose reversals. >> it is a magic bullet but it does save lives. >> the distribution of narcan is credited with lowering the city's overdose death rate which is on the rise in baltimore county where dan torch lived. emergency responders do carry narcan but in dan's case it was too late. tony torch wants it to be

>> good morning. we're starting you off with a live view from the skycam. that's a live shot right now downtown at the inner harbor. 45 degrees. notice a lot of clouds down to our south and east. if you were looking north, it would look a lot clearer right now. 36 at the wi thurgood marshal. we have a lot of clouds creeping from from the south and that's because of a storm system in the carolinas, so the clouds stretch

all the way from the carolinas up into the mid-atlantic right now. the rain is confined down to the carolinas. basically from the outer banks all the way to the coast of south carolina and this continues to migrate on shore. this little disturbance is going to continue to stay near the southeast coast for the next couple days an eventually head out to sea. the big yes was whether or not this was going to track up into the coast as another coastal storm. doesn't look like that's going to be a concern so that's good news for people traveling. now let's talk about current conditions happening right now. the winds are not a big factor. around 4 miles per hour downtown. you hardly kneel that, but the winds are a little stronger as you get into the southern part of the state. 15-mile-per-hour winds right now in crystal. 21-mile-per-hour gusts in ocean city. paw tuck set river, 23 miles per hour. so it's stronger, more breezy as you go further south. that's mainly a concern for the bay. anywhere south of the bay bridge today, there is a small craft advisory in effect. we're expecting the waves to be very where from 1 to 2 feet.

the winds, northeast 10 to 15 knots, maybe a few gusts up to 20 knots throughout the day. the next high tide at 4:21 p.m. we expect more clouds to head down towards the south, ocean city, with highs ranging from 53 a 5 fewer. closer to -- 54. closer to baltimore, a high of 52 degrees. cooler into the mountains. mostly sunny skies, but highs only in the 40's today. you notice a lot of clouds. they're scattered, but they're still in place and that's from that storm system down to our south. you see that in the satellite picture, stepping all the way number the -- investing all the way up from the conference. high pressure off to our west. that high pressure system is it our friend. it's going to keep it out to sea, through the thanksgiving holiday. we'll fast forward to one model interpretation as we go into the holiday. let's go back to that. this kicks that storm all the way out by thursday. high pressure dominant weather pattern. that is great news for the seven day forecast, because it keeps

us mostly dry. maybe some showers creeping in from the south monday and tuesday. that's a pretty minor, if anything. 53 on monday. 53 on tuesday as well. 57 by wednesday. we're already on the way up to 60 degrees on thursday, with mostly sunny skies and a cold front comes through friday night. >> well, some got their thanksgiving dinner early, including turkey and all the trimmings. every year, best friends pet care in pennsylvania hosts a thanksgiving feast for the pets of animals boarded there during the holiday period. roasted vegetables and sides were all on the menu and as you can see, the dogs quickly gobbled it up. the thanksgiving meal should be enjoyed by all, all people that is, not pets. and we have some tips to keep your pets safe this holiday season. we just saw that video. is that a good thing to do? >> you probably want to avoid giving your pets food from the table. a lot of pets have the dog eyes and they want you to give them something to share with.

something to -- if you want to share with them, you know, time of giving, like i said, during the holidays, but we want to try to avoid giving them fatty foods, like the skin off the turkey, try to avoid the bones. >> a lot of the side meals have butter in them. a lot of butter. >> a lot of times, your pet can get pretty severe gastrointestinal symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive gas. only so many times you can blame it on the dog. >> nothing you want to deal with, especially on thanksgiving. we have some tips to put up for people, pet safety tips an one of the things you talk about is avoid feeding pets table scraps. >> absolutely. avoid feeding table scraps. be very careful to dispose of bones and the turkey, very well, because my dogs are really bad about getting into the trash, so when you're out watching the football game, they could be in the trash and you don't want to make an emergency visit to the

vets. >> that actually does happen, dogs, they counter surf all the time for this stuff, so you have to be careful. the bones from the bird, they could splinter their throats, is that right? >> a lot of people don't realize that chicken bones or turkey bones are a lot more fragile and they tend to splinter into sharp shards and that can per for rate their intestines. >> this is the time of year the folks will bring up the cart and put the food on the cart to make it easier to get to the side dishes. >> a lot of times the carts are lower and easier for the dogs to get to as well. regardless much how high you put it up, if it smells good, the cats or dogs will finds a way to get to it. >> buy them some extra treats. >> stop by petsmart and buy them some treats. >> obviously at the pet

outside. it is cool right now. 45 degrees downtown. we have 38 at bwi. marshal, 38. 35 in sykesville. the forecast for today, mostly sunny skies, a few scattered clouds from the south. the sun already came up at 6:54 a.m. this morning and now we have winds out of the northeast, knife to 10 miles per hour. temperatures will actually improve, as we head towards thing in holiday. we'll talk about that when we come back. >> our big story this morning, a baltimore county community threatened i didn't been underground gas leak. >> more than a dozen homes will be demolished, following a settlement between homeowners and a big oil company. 11 news reporter george latis has that story. >> residents believe it's the effect of years of underground fuel co contamination on jappa d to the nearby backyards,

what'sments and underground drainage pipes. 16 homes on the block have now been bought by hess and are speck to be demolished -- speck to be demolished this spring. according to councilman david marks, it's part of a settlement between the homeowners and hess. >> i certainly would have perfected some steps earlier, by the gasoline company to deal with this. >> maryland's department of the environment started investigating a fuel leak in 1987 from underground storage tanks at the hess. those storage tanks were removed in 1991 and no liquid fuel has been deneck in monitoring wells since 1995, but the department says there are low levels of fuel contamination in the groundwater and resulting in continued reports of gas odors in the neighborhood. >> you can smell it right here. i can smell 2. do you smell that in. >> i smell that. >> none of the homeowners who settled would talk to us, but we did talk to a man and isolation

plays uncle who were not included this the settlement because they were told the contamination stopped 5 feet from their property. >> the fuels and everything, and the oil slick in the water was just gushing from the back -- that's back right this and it was coming directly into our backyard. i don't understand why our houses, you know what i mean, is ok, but all these aren't. and we're right behind the gas station. >> the teals say the department of the environment took samples from their house about a year ago. >> they never got back with me with any information whatsoever, so it was like we were left out in the cold. >> and left with that uneasy fuel odor. you don't even want to strike a match out here in the summertime. it can't be healthy for us. >> state officials say the contamination has not affected the drinking water because the homes are on public water. as for the land where the homes will be demolished, sources say it will probably turn in to some sort of public park, if the land is not too hazardous.

in the newsroom, george latis, wbal-tv 11 news. >> a house fire sent two people to the hospital, including a firefighter, but both are expected to survive. the fire in the 9 hup block of melbourne hill drive was reported around 7:00 a.m. saturday morning. it took 60 firefighters about half an hour to bring it under control. a 57-year-old man who lived in the house was taken to a hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. and a firefighter was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, the cause of the fire is under investigation. in baltimore city, police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident. we're told it happened early yesterday morning in the northeast baltimore. police say a car hit a man shortly before 2:00 a.m. in the 5300 block of frankfurt heav. he later died at the hospital. police are searching for a black four door mazda with a partial maryland tag of 5183 or 5189. >> also in the city, police are investigating a shooting in the 300 block of east north avenue. it happened shortly before

2:00 a.m. saturday morning. police say they arrived to find a 30-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. the victim was taken to an area hospital. there's no word on his condition or any possible suspects. >> president obama is in asia this morning for a summit to shore up relations with america's allies in the pacific and tomorrow, he'll become the first sitting american president to visit miramar. here's 11 news reporter brian moore with that story from washington. >> president obama took off for asia on his first overseas trip since winning reelection. he'll be attending a summit of asian leaders in cambodia and stopping in miramar, where he will meet opposition leader and fellow nobel laureate soon key. still, he can't escape political turmoil at home and the looming crisis in the middle east. >> we are one step short of an all out ground operation in the middle east. >> the president is trying to make pease with congressional republicans at home. they have until december 31 to

small craft advisory for southern portions of the bay, south of the bay bridge, that extends all the way through monday. keep that in mind if you plan to be out today. the calmest weather will be north of the bay bridge. winds, 10 to 15 knots. waves around 1 to 2 feet. the next high tide at fort mchenry coming in at 9:41 a.m. this morning and falling, 10:26 p.m. looking at the temperatures, it's much warmer if you head down towards the south. salisbury at 45. ocean city, 49, while it's only mainly in the 30's all the way from the eastern shore, and baltimore itself, mainly in the 30's as well. the forecast on this sunday, we're expecting a lot of sunshine up towards the north. more clouds as you go down towards the south, but overall, temperatures from baltimore down to ocean city, should be ranging from 50 to 55 degrees. it's northern areas that are much colder. 51 in southern pennsylvania, only 43 in the mountains of maryland. now let's take you to pittsburgh. the steelers they're trying to take on the ravens tonight. we've expecting the ravens to

have a good game tonight and the weather should be pretty nice. mostly clear skies at lines field at 8:30 p.m., that's the kickoff, where temperatures will range from 41 to 44 degrees. winds east, 10 miles per hour. so no weather problems expected for the ravens in pittsburgh. taking you to the currents weather pattern, you can see clouds coming in from the south. other than that, there is a clear patch just rights over baltimore. all the clouds extend up to the north from a storm system down in the carolinas. fortunately, high pressure sits who have to our west. this high pressure system is going to kick this storm out to sea, and it's going to bring some fairly nice weather hall the way through the thanksgiving holidays. so if you have travel plans at least in the east, i think things are going to be pretty good, especially wednesday into thursday. for tomorrow, maybe a few showers creep in from the south. same case on tuesday, though baltimore should stamosly dry. we warm up to 60 degrees by thursday for thanksgiving and a weak cold front comes through on friday night. >> for more than a decade, it has become a prethanksgiving day tradition.

at the courthouse where individuals become families just in time for the holidays. 11 news debra weiner has the story. >> once a year, balloons mark the joy that takes place inside the clarence mitchell courthouse in baltimore. it is national adoption day. for ronald and his wife, it means two 15-year-old boys living in foster care officially become their sons. >> congratulations to both of you. >> it's goods to be part of a family, making it come together, saying they are my sons and we are all a family. >> for me, it makes me feel regular in place with everybody else that has parents, and it just makes you feel good. >> 32 children were adopted in baltimore. and hundreds of other courthouses across the country experience the same warm scene.

hearing from the administration, what they're trying to do is reassure israel that america supports the right to defend herself. they're working with the egyptians to try to tamp this down as much as possible, to try to get as much restraint as possible. the concern is about a ground invasion into gaza by the israelis, something that they're planning for several days that they won't rule out. i certainly don't think they want to do that. can they send a message to hamas to try to deter any further action and i don't know what's going to create that. i'm going to start off the program this morning talking to tom freedman of the "new york times," who better to get some perspective on what this is about and where this is going. >> you really have a big show today too. general petraeus testified behind closed doors about the attack in libya and you're going to be talking with the heads of both intelligence agencies. what are you expecting them to say about his testimony? >> well, i think there's a central question that has to be resolved, which is, is there any contradiction between what was said about the attack by the

administration, including the intelligence community, right after the 9-11 attack in libya, and what was said days after on this program and others by the u.n. ambassador, susan rice, who is basically a spokesperson for the administration. i think that becomes a key question about the administration knew and when and what she said about it at a politically charged time, we were so toward the end campaign. >> that brings up the question of u.n. ambassador, susan rice, both sides of the table not sure she might be the right choice to replace hillary clinton. >> and it's the republicans who are leading the charge. lindsay graham among them. he'll be an exclusive guest of mine this morning, saying he would block her nomination, based on what they know about benghazi, they want a watergate-style committee to look into all of this, which something resisted by democrats on the hill. >> ok. all along still the president saying he's hopeful a compromise

can be reached amidst the fiscal cliff. >> this negotiation is going to start right away, right after thanksgiving. we're going to see, i think, template on both sides for how to get this negotiated. there have been positive signals coming from both sides thus far. the administration and the president making it pretty clear that he's got some leverage on taxes that he intends to use, and i think that's where all of this will begin. >> ok. on a much lighter note, author doris kearns goodwin will be on your show. >> she's basically preparing for hur next starring role in a picture. it's a major motion picture based on such significant work that she's done, studying lincoln, it's great for the country in terms of educating people about lincoln and she thinks really true to an important part of his life. >> you have an in with her.

>> good morning. let's start you off with a live look at the radar right now. you can see all the activity happening down near the carolinas. showers push onshore in south carolina and just starting to make their way towards the outer banks. the storm system will mostly stay to our south, but we're already seeing clouds coming up in to maryland because of it. let's take a look from our live view from skycam. you can see the clouds down to our south and east. skies are mostly clear as you go north of that. 45 the current temperature downtown. 38 degrees at b.w.i. thurgood marshal. winds are north, 5 miles per hour. we have stronger winds as go down towards the south. we'll talk about that, how it's affect being the bay. look at the satellite picture, you can see all the clouds ace mentioned, see them from the

skycam, sitting in the southern part of the state. another batch of clouds passing through baltimore, heading up in to southern pennsylvania. this is going to be the pattern today. areas of scattered clouds, but still enough to see sunshine for today. until you get further south. that's where they're closer to the storm system, which is why they're going to see more clouds in southern maryland throughout the day. that storm sitting off the coast of the carolinas, but high pressure is off to our west. this high pressure system really going to be our friend as we go in to the thanksgiving holiday, as it's going to push everything offshore. so it pushes this storm off the coast, and keeps it that way, mostly as we go in to the holiday. that means mostly dry weather for any travelers heading in to thanksgiving. by the left of the thanksgiving, we'll have to keep an eye on that as a cold front moves our way. let's talk about the winds. they're stronger further south. we have 13-mile-per-hour gusts in crystal. 23 knew the patuxent river. stronger across the bay and that means a small craft advisory is in effect south of the bay

bridge. keep that in mind if you man to be out on the water. waves, 1 to feet. the waves should be even higher as you get south of the bay, more towards the 2 feet range and we expect the winds out of the northeast today, 10 to 15 knots, gusts up to 20. the next high tide at 9:41 a.m. this morning at fort mchenry. if you plan to travel elsewhere across the state, we're expecting temperatures around 53 in southern maryland. 54, ocean city. 52 for the high temperature in baltimore. more clouds to the south, more sunshine up towards the north and that's good news, because the skies will be mostly clear in pittsburgh tonight. the ravens in town and they're hoping to take down the stealers at heinz field, 8:20 p.m. the kickoff. temperatures on the chilly side, dropping into the 30's by the end of the game, but at least dry weather means great football weather as well. just a little cold out there for the fans. seven day forecast, showers stay south of us monday and tuesday, maybe they creep into the farther southern areas. great traveling weather across the region as we go in to

wednesday, we even warm up on thanksgiving. >> it's that time of oragain, millions of americans will be hitting the roads and taking to the skies to spend time with family and friends, but tighter budgets mean slightly shorter trips this thanksgiving. c nbc's phil lebeau reports. >> thanksgiving weekend and americans are making travel plans. >> i'm going to california, meet my daughter, we're going to drive to santa fe. >> it's thanksgiving, you want to be with your friends and family. >> aaa says 43.6 million americans will travel for thanksgiving. a slight i increase from last year. on average, 588 miles down 16% from a year ago. those traveling are also spending less for their trips. just under $500. a reflection of tighter budgets. >> what we think is that people having spent more on gas than they planned, still want to travel for the thanksgiving holiday, but they are going to, as you pointed out, slightly

reduce the distance they will travel in favor of the automobile in favor of an airline ticket. >> because americans will spend less traveling for thanksgiving this year, fewer will be flying. in fact, aaa says just over three million people will take to the skies this thanksgiving weekend. the fewest since 2009. while fewer people are flying for thanksgiving, more will be boarding planes, buses, and cruise shims. but the good old fashioned road trip in a car is how 90% of americans will be getting away. the good news, gas prices have dropped to under $3.50 a gallon. >> we're down from the peak that we saw in september, and prices for thanksgiving will probably be just about where they were last year for thanksgiving. >> welcome news for those hitting the road thanksgiving weekend. >> phil lebeau, cnbc chicago. >> and if you are wondering what the busiest travel day will be, experts say tuesday. well, joining us now to help make your travel a little

in there. >> but if imitation is all you have. >> you can use it. but if not, bourbon is actually a good substitute for vanilla. it doesn't have that vanilla flavor, but you'll get a little bit of -- >> it won't cook out? everyone will be happy with your pie then. >> cream, cinnamon, melted butter makes this amazing. >> what is that, about a half a stick? >> half stick of melted butter, la cup and a half of milk. >> that is thick milk. >> you're going to put this in the pie crust. i make my hone pie crust of course. i've been making pie since i was 7 years old with my grandmother, these pies are 10-inch pies, they're beautiful. you can also buy a crust. pillsbury, it's ok. if you have to, i'd rather you concentrate on the filling too. make a beautiful filling. >> may i? >> absolutely. >> thank you, sir. >> this is just one of your pies though. you've got a pecan pie. >> we've got a pee can bourbon
